Tall timber skyscrapers, beacon for a future friendlier to climate

On November 6th, Parallel 52 member, Do Janne Vermeulen, director at Dutch Team V Architecture gave a keynote speech in Vancouver.

It was a full house, with more than 500 attendees at the Wood Solutions conference. With all these wood specialist attending, it was an excellent opportunity to go in detail in the HAUT project, the 73 meter tall hybrid mass-timber residential building in Amsterdam.

Lunch lecture Craig Applegath

Last week (27 September) Craig Applegath gave an inspiring lecture about sustainable wooden high-rise buildings at the Faculty of Architecture in Delft. He spoke about how his architectural firm DIALOG has been exploring the opportunity of developing an 100+ storey wood-hybrid mixed-use tower prototype with the following five objectives:

Virtual meeting Cisco

An event last week organized by Parallel52: Dutch and Canadian architects met via CISCO videoconference systems, set up in Toronto and Amsterdam. The topic of this fourth discussion sponsored by CISCO was on international collaboration between architectural firms. After a presentation by the Canadian Embassy on CETA for fifteen minutes, a discussion started about changes in labour mobility and government procurement, among others. The participants were enthusiastic and would like to continue discussions with potential partners on a range of topics.

Trade mission climate change resiliency

Last October a Dutch trade mission to Vancouver and Toronto took place around the topic climate change resiliency. The event included several workshops, speakers and network events that relate to the challenges that both Canada and the Netherlands are facing to ensure liveable cities in the future. Some of these challenges include spatial planning, water management, storms, fire hazards, transit, soil remediation and social equity. None of these topics can be dealt separately and an integral approach is required.

HAUT - Amsterdam

HAUT, the 21-storey wooden residential building in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, is a serious contender to become the tallest timber tower in the world. This month the project received a BREEAM Outstanding certificate for sustainable design with the exceptional score of 90,76%. This is truly unique; never before has this qualification been awarded to a residential building in The Netherlands.
